Textbook Rental Information

  • The rental fee is non-refundable and the rental term is for one semester.
  • A current student ID and a valid credit/debit card with an expiration date valid throughout the rental term are required to rent and return textbooks.
  • If you drop a class or withdraw from school, please return the rented textbooks immediately.
  • On or before 3:00 p.m. on the last day of the current semester, please bring the textbook with any components (i.e. CD or DVD it contained at time of rental in good salable condition). If not returned by the due date, the replacement cost of the rented textbook, applicable sales tax, and a $20 processing fee per unreturned rental textbook will be charged to the student's charge card. The replacement cost of a rental textbook is the textbook's replenishment cost from the publisher.
  • You are responsible for loss, theft, spine damage, liquid or fire damage or defects that would make the book unusable for sale/rental by the Bookstore. If the Bookstore staff determines the books are in “non-returnable” condition; you will be charged for a replacement copy and a processing fee.
  • Rental stickers are required to remain on the book for the duration of the rental. If the sticker is removed prior to return of the book there will be a $20 processing fee for tracking down the rental records and reprocessing the agreement.

Rental FAQ’s

Q: Are all books available for rental?
A: Not all books are available for rental. Certain textbooks have been selected to be included in the rental program but not all textbooks are eligible.

Q: How can I find out if the books I need are available for the rental program?
A: You can find information about all books carried by Southwest Tech by looking at the textbook section of the Bookstore website or by looking on the shelf tags in the Bookstore.

Q: Are only new books available for rental?
A: New and used books are available for rental

Q: What do I need to have to rent a textbook?
A: You need to have a valid credit card with an expiration date that exceeds the rental period and a current student ID

Q: Can I rent books if I receive Financial Aid?
A: Yes. - You will still need a valid credit/debit card on file but the cost of the rental will be deducted from your Financial Aid

Q: What if I don’t return the book at the end of the semester?
A: The credit/debit card you have on file will be charged the replacement cost of the book and a $20 processing fee.

Q: Are rental books able to be sold at “Book Buyback”?
A: No, since the book is rented, it must be returned to the bookstore staff to avoid the replacement cost being billed to your credit/debit card account

Q: What if I need a book for two semesters but the rental period is for one semester?
A: You will need to “renew” the rental.

Q: What if I only need the book for part of a semester? Can I pay a reduced rental rate?
A: No, the rental is for a semester.

Q: What if I drop a class, will I be refunded?
A: You will receive an 80 percent refund within the first week of the semester, same as if you purchased the book.

Q: Can I markup, highlight or make notes in a rented book?
A: It is not advisable to do this. It will affect the condition of the book upon return and if it appears excessive, you could be charged the replacement cost of the book.

Q: How do I know if I rented a book?
A: You will have signed a rental agreement (it is part of the transaction receipt) upon taking possession of the book

Q: How much do I save with Textbook Rental?
A: That varies by title, cost of the book and whether it is a new or used rental, but on average it can be anywhere from 25 percent to 50 percent.

Q: Can the Bookstore refuse to accept my Textbook Rental when I return it?
A: Yes. If the book has water damage, has pages missing, excessive highlighting, note taking, etc. Remember this is subjective, so your opinion of “excessive” and ours may vary.

Q: Can I buy my rented textbook?
A: You can purchase the book, but it would be at the used cost. The rental money already paid will not go towards the purchase price. We don’t have a way to “rent-to-own”.

Q: Why do you need a credit/debit card if I am paying for the rental some other way?
A: If the book isn’t returned at all or is brought back in a condition that is unacceptable, we need a way to charge you for the replacement cost of the book.
